Discussion:
- The previous chapter ended while the Israelites were trying to decide on a leader. This chapter opens with a little biography about a man called Jephthah . He was born by a prostitute to his father, Gilead. His brothers drove him away because they believed that since his mother was not married to their father, he was not worthy of parttaking in his inheritance.
- After a while, the Israelite leaders at Gilead approached Jephthah to find out if he could be their leader. He agreed on one condition: he would be their leader henceforth.
- Afterwards, Jephthah tried to be diplomatic by sending a message to the Ammonite to enquire what grievances, if any they had against Israel. Their response was that they believed that red Israelites had taken some of their land. However, this was not the exact truth. Ammonite are descended from Lot, Abraham’s nephew. God’s covenant relationship with Abraham’s is what prompted God to therefore spare the Ammonites.
- After this back and forth discussion, the Ammonites still refused to listen to. Jephthah led them into war.
- Just before he went, he made a vow that he would sacrifice the first thing that welcomed him after the battle. Unfortunately, it was his daughter who welcomed him.
- I personally believe that Jephthah acted in error. God doesn’t take human sacrifices. The only time he almost took one was when Abraham’s was supposed to sacrifice Isaac but he eventually didn’t because God sent a lamb. He should have sacrificed the first animal he saw. In fact , he should never have made such a vow in the first place!
Today’s Prayer: Dear Lord, from today, please help me to be slow to speech and quick to listen. May I bot make thoughtless and hasty vows. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
