Daily Memory Verse: “Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14 NLT).” http://bible.com/116/heb.12.14.NLT

Bible reading for the day:

John 4

Notable Verses:

  • John 4:10‭, ‬13‭-‬14 NLT: “Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
  • John 4:23‭-‬24 NLT: “But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.  For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
  • John 4:34 NLT: “Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.
  • John 4:‬49‭-‬50 NLT: “The official pleaded, “Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.” Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!” And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.

Discussion:

  • Jesus was not the actual person baptizing people: it was his disciples (v 1,2).
  • Jesus did not conform to the ways of men: He spoke to the Samaritan woman even though it was against Jewish culture to speak to Samaritans (v 9). As Christians, we must dare to stand out and not conform to the patterns,  customs or expectations of this world but allow God’s Word to be our standard.
  • Jesus is all-knowing: He told the lady how many men she had been married to and her current relationship status(v 18).  There are planters and there are harvesters. Paul also talked about a similar concept when he said that he planted and Apollos watered but God gave the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6).
  • Many Samaritans heard the Gospel because this woman ran to tell others she had met the Messiah.
  • Jesus’ second miracle was to heal a boy by proxy (v 49 –  54). He didn’t need to physically see the boy to heal him. He just told the boy’s father not to worry and that his son was headed. He is not deterred by distance.

This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.  (1 Timothy 1:15 NLT)
