Bible reading for the day:
John 6Notable Verses:
- John 6:5-6, 11 NLT: “Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.”
- John 6:35, 37 NLT: “Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.”
- John 6:63 NLT: “The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”
- John 6:70 NLT: “Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.”
Discussion:
- This chapter talks about how crowds of people followed Jesus because of his miraculous signs (v 1,2). It is easier to believe in things which are evidence-based or people who show results.
- Jesus used 5 loaves and 2 fish to feed 5000 men and an unknown number of women and children with leftovers! This was truly a miracle (v 8 – 13).
- Jesus walked on water (v 16 – 20).
- He made the boat the disciples were riding in arrive immediately (v 21).
- The primary work that Jesus wants for us is to believe in him. Doing ‘works’ and performing miracles is secondary (v 29).
- Jesus repeats it over and over again that it his God’s will for those who believe in Jesus to have eternal life.
- It is God who draws us to to Himself (v 37, 65). No one can come to God except he is drawn by God.

This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. (1 Timothy 1:15 NLT)
