Although I am a grownup, I don’t really think that I have arrived yet if you know what I mean. In fact, you can never really ‘arrive’. Anyways, I am fond of telling people that I admire, “I want to be like you when I ‘grow up’.”
So, what do I want to be when I ‘grow up’? For a long time, I have desired to be a dermatologist and I am working really hard towards that. However, if you asked me what would I prefer being known as? I would prefer to be known as firstly a friend of Jesus and then a praise & worship leader who just happens to be a doctor. I want people to remember that I was kind, honest, gentle, pure, loving, hardworking and all the rest of those good stuff.
When I started doing PERISCOPE broadcasts this month, I knew that I had to get some content to share. This birthed my desire to teach God’s word. If you have a desire to be something, you need to work towards it. You can’t just sit down and wait for it to happen. You have to gain knowledge and receive training to be an expert in whatever you want to be. “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)
[bctt tweet=”To become an expert in your desired field, you need to gain knowledge and receive training in it.”]
I don’t just want to be someone who inspires people. I don’t want to be an inspirational or motivational speaker. There are many people like that. I want to be set apart. I want to be a knowledgeable teacher and a preacher of God’s word who inspires and motivates people.
When I was in the University of Ghana, my spiritual father (Bishop Dag Heward-Mills) had a CD series of messages about becoming an effective teacher of the bible. I couldn’t find my copy so I decided to invest in a book called, “Teach the Bible to Change Lives” by Glenn Brooke. As I read through the book, I am learning so much about becoming a better teacher of God’s word. You can start reading it for free HERE.

So, now what do I want to be when I ‘grow up’? Firstly, a genuine teacher of the Bible and secondly a praise and worship leader.
Of course, my other duties and responsibilities (like being a wife, mom, dermatologist, entrepreneur etc) are still important but these are the three main things I want to be: a friend of Jesus, teacher and worshipper.

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12 New American Standard Bible).

this reminds me of a verse i was reading recently. for God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. So for me i just want to be what He wants me to be. Keep doing what He wants you to do!
I totally agree. In doing what he wants me to do, I become all that he wants me to!
